Using some intermediate measurements, the Pythagorean Theorem function calculates the distance to a point that cannot be directly hit by the laser.

Power is provided by AAA batteries; With 2 batteries, up to 5,000 measurements can be performed without replacement. A low battery indicator lets you know when the batteries need to be replaced, and the laser's auto-off feature helps conserve battery power.
